The First Client of Complex Trauma Therapy is the Therapist
TIFT® therapist posture: ground, holding, architecture and Watch - Wait - Wonder.
“The First Client of Complex Trauma Therapy is the Therapist”
TIFT® THERAPIST POSTURE
The therapist’s own field is the first field that must be met.
In TIFT®, posture comes before intervention. The therapist provides ground, holding and a stable architecture while remaining receptive, bounded and distinct.
GROUND AND HOLDING
Provide ground
Be embodied, oriented and present. Ground is conveyed through position, pace, limits and reliable return. The client does not have to create or carry their own scaffolding.
Provide holding
Holding is an organised, receptive interior: the capacity to receive what is explicit, implicit, unspoken or without words—without taking it over, filling it, explaining it too quickly, losing the distinction between I and you, or turning it into teaching.
Maintain the architecture
Hold orientation, limits, rhythm, continuity and differentiation. The architecture remains stable while the unfolding remains emergent. Stability is not rigidity; it is dependable relational ground.
A SIMPLE POSTURE: WATCH · WAIT · WONDER
Watch Wait Wonder
See what is actually happening in the relational field and in your own responses.
Resist the impulse to repair, accelerate, reassure or produce a different state.
Remain curious about the coherence of what appears: What is this
organisation protecting or maintaining?
Be the second hand: What is the sound of one hand clapping (Japanese Koan) The client’s field is the first hand. The therapist becomes the second hand through a response that is precise, bounded and available—not through performance, intensity or expertise displayed from above.
Your task is availability – being, not performing.
CONTACT WITHOUT FUSION: TIFT’S ARCHETYPE TRIAD
Do not assume that warmth, proximity or emotional intensity are regulating. The appropriate closeness and distance are fitted to the person, while contact, limits and differentiation remain intact.
Architect Healer Explorer
Holds frame, limits, orientation, rhythm, continuity and provides the membrane that permits contact without fusion.
Offers an organised, responsive compassionate interior that can receive life without possessing or directing it. Compassion is not emotion, but a space
Perceives what emerges through living connection and accompanies new degrees of freedom without prescribing them. The growth point is in the present moment and unfolds through an emerging shift
WHEN YOUR OWN PLAN B APPEARS
Therapist reactions are field information, not personal failure. Observe if you move toward:
- Over-responsibility — needing to save, fix or carry the client.
- Excessive explanation — speaking, teaching or interpreting instead of meeting.
- Withdrawal — boredom, tiredness, irritation, confusion or a wish to escape.
- Technique accumulation — doing more to manage your own anxiety or sense of ineffectiveness. Return to your own ground and accept the “non-knowing state”
Body Position Posture Architecture
Recognise your state and work consciously from it. Use the squeezing exercise, feel your feet on the floor, and treat this information as countertransference and as a possible mirror of states not yet available to the client.
Re-establish I and you, closeness and distance, availability and limits. Revert to the default conditions of the session sequence.
Return to watch, wait and wonder.
Resume holding the ground rather than trying to produce the outcome. Mainly maintain the rhythm and sequence of the session
The TIFT map usually provides orientation to where the client is. In moments of not-knowing, however, the therapist may lose their own ground and drop into collapse, confusion or excessive activity. The task is to remain holding and meeting the client’s implicit state without rushing to restore certainty. This allows the client’s system to express where it is and what it needs in tune with its own dynamic.
THREE QUESTIONS
- Am I meeting or performing? Receiving, or explaining?
- Am I holding or taking over? Remaining distinct, or moving toward fusion?
- Is my position clear? Is the architecture still perceptible?
SUSTAINABILITY BELONGS TO POSTURE
If the therapist repeatedly leaves the work exhausted, empty or over-activated, something in the position or architecture may have been lost. The response is to restore ground and adjust the structure—not to question personal worth.
